what is most important?

it’s a new year, a new you, a new website, a new chance to set aside all the distractions and focus solely on what is most important.  but what do we focus on? what is most important?  i am not asking for what is most important at work, or at home or even in life.  All of those things are important but what I want to ask you is what is most important above all else, even above life itself?

i posed this question to our modern wise man on a mountain and google responded with a quote from observer.com which struck me as profound.

people tend to go through life with blinders on and wearing rose colored glasses.  we see what we want to see, believe what we want to believe and ultimately our perceptions become our reality.  we look out into the world and we make assumptions so instead of seeing what is really there we see what we expect to see.

the problem is our perspective.  our vision is too small, our understanding too limited.  we are not able to put enough distance between us and reality to gain a clean, unbiased, assumption free view of reality.  we need someone with a higher perspective to answer the question for us.

someone once asked Jesus what is the most important commandment in the law of moses?  Jesus’ reply was, essentially, all of them.  Jesus told him that the most important command is to love God and love your neighbor.  If we can do these two simple things we will have obeyed every single law in the entire Bible.  Matthew 22:36-40

the problem is, we cant.  if we were to act or even think for one second that we are better than someone else,  if there is anyone around who we fail to love at any time, then we have broken every single law and command that God has every given.  the Bible is not a set of hundreds of do’s and don’ts. God’s law is just two do’s, love God and love people.  but we are selfish, we cant do it, instead we find ourselves covered in sin.  but this is not what is most important.

what is most important is a story about Jesus , promised by the old testament, seen in the gospels and proclaimed in the new testament. it is a story that will change your life and your eternal destiny if you will let it, if you only believe it to be true.
